UID:events_stanford_edu_38157
DESCRIPTION:<p>As a child in Rio\, singer Claudia Villela fell asleep to
the sounds of a nearby samba school\, and awoke to her mother&#8217\;s s
inging and her father&#8217\;s harmonica playing. &#8220\;My singing is
the sum of all the music I&#8217\;ve heard\, from Brazilian baroque to b
ossa nova to free jazz.&#8221\; Her self-taught\, five-octave range was
fully formed when she arrived in the U.S. to refine her jazz chops under
the tutelage of Sheila Jordan and Ray Brown. The result is a startling
and intuitive musical sensibility that goes beyond samba and boss: She c
hannels visionaries like Egberto Gismonti and Milton Nascimento. Says Be
la Fleck: &#8220\;I was blown away by Claudia&#8217\;s ability and music
ality. &#160\;She is pure music.&#8221\;&#160\; This special performance
will include Claudia playingpiano and percussion on her own original co

continue the discussion of international human rights in the 21st centur

 --------------------------------------------------- <br /><br /> Each ye
ar\, as part of the Summer Human Rights program\, a distinguished intern
ational human rights advocate is invited to deliver the keynote address
in the public lecture series. Last summer\, for the inauguration of the
program\, we had two keynotes\, one by Fatou Bensouda\, the first Africa
n and the first woman to serve as chief prosecutor of the International
Criminal Court\; and the other by Philip Gourevitch\, a staff writer for
<em>The New Yorker</em>\, and author of prize-winning journalism on Rwa
nda. This summer we are honored to host Albie Sachs\, a courageous anti-
apartheid campaigner in South Africa who went on to help draft his count
ry&#8217\;s first democratic constitution\, and to serve as a judge on i
ts highest court. <br /><br /> Sachs&#8217\;s career in human rights act
ivism started when he was seventeen years old\, continuing through colle
ge and into his law practice in Cape Town where he defended people charg
ed under the state&#8217\;s racist statutes. Attracting the displeasure
of authorities\, Sachs was first subjected to &#8220\;banning laws&#8221
\; restricting his activities\, then arrested\, and finally put into sol
itary confinement. Upon release from prison\, he went into voluntary exi
le but never discontinued his human rights work. In 1988 in Mozambique\,
Sachs was nearly killed when a bomb placed under his car by South Afric
an agents exploded. He lost an arm and sight in one eye\, but emerged fr
om the ordeal with renewed idealism for his cause and what he describes
as simple joy at being alive.<br /><br /> In 1990\, Sachs returned to So
uth Africa\, where he worked to draft the constitution for the newly dem
ocratic country. In 1994\, he was appointed by Nelson Mandela to the Con
stitutional Court\, where he served as judge until 2009\, writing decisi
ons that changed the face of human rights in South Africa\, including a
decision in favor of same-sex marriage in 2005. <br /><br /> He is the a
uthor of <em>Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter</em>\, which chronicles
his response to the 1988 car bombing\, and five other books including <
em>The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs</em>\, which was dramatized for the Roy
 al Shakespeare Company and broadcast by the BBC.<br /><br /> <strong> <b

UID:events_stanford_edu_38417
DESCRIPTION:<p>In February of this year\, the White House Office of Scien

funded research freely available to the public within one year of publi
cation&#8230\;&#160\; Such results include peer-reviewed publications an
d digital data."&#160\; Funding agency responses to this directive could
dramatically change the process of scientific information exchange and
fundamentally alter how scientific research is performed and archived at
US universities and government laboratories.&#160\; Each agency has bee
n directed to submit a draft plan by August 22\, 2013.&#160\; We feel st

als that have been developed by the funding agencies and the potential i
mpact these policy changes will have on the University research communit

e organizing a one day workshop at Stanford University where major stake
holders will present their perspectives on these impending policy change

SUMMARY:Inspired by Temptation: Odilon Redon and Saint Anthony
UID:events_stanford_edu_35021
DESCRIPTION:<p>The great French symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840&#8211
\;1916) often paired his art with literature to create an art of the ima
gination. Three of Redon&#8217\;s most famous lithographic albums were i
 nspired by Gustave Flaubert&#8217\;s novel <em>The</em> <em>Temptation o
f Saint Anthony</em> (1874). Based on the legend of a third century monk
who retreated to the desert to contemplate God\, Flaubert&#8217\;s stor
y describes the fantastical events that transpire over the course of one
night in which Anthony is assaulted by erotic visions and demonic appar
