DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Medieval Matters is a new series of public lectures sponsored by Continuing Studies=2C The Program in Medieval Studies=2C and the Sarum Seminar=2E It will explore the relevance of medieval history and culture for understanding the modern world=2E=0D=0A=0D=0AIn this lecture=2C Patrick Geary will examine contemporary uses of the Middle Ages by various political movements=2C left and right=2C in Europe today=2E He will explore how modern-day Europeans proudly attempt to trace their national identities to medieval origins=2C linking them with such groups as the Celts=2C Franks=2C Gauls=2C Goths=2C Huns=2C Serbs=2C and others who inhabited=2C traversed=2C or pillaged the continent more than a thousand years ago=2E Geary will explain that=2C historically=2C such claims are often groundless=2E He will assert that the idea of national character being fixed throughout the medieval period is largely without basis in historical fact=2E Dismantling these nationalist myths about how the present nature of Europe was born=2C he will provide a more accurate account of Europe=3Fs transformation between the 4th and 9th centuries=2E=0D=0A=0D=0APATRICK GEARY=0D=0AProfessor of Medieval History=2C UCLA=0D=0APatrick Geary is one of America=3Fs leading and most prolific medieval scholars=2E He has published scores of articles and numerous books=2C including Phantoms of Remembrance=2C Living with the Dead in the Middle Ages=2C Furta Sacra=2C and The Myth of Nations=2C on which this lecture is based=2E He has served as director of UCLA=3Fs Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and coauthored a six-part television series on medieval history=2E
