The Stanford community will celebrate Día de los Muertos on Saturday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the Old Union Courtyard with featured musical guest, Firme from San Jose, CA.
The blend of old and new as exemplified by Firme, is reflected in Stanford?s annual celebration of Día de Los Muertos. Celebrated in Mexico and other regions of Central and South America, Día de los Muertos blends Pre-Colombian beliefs and practices that celebrate and remember those who have passed. Modern celebrations of these ancient traditions include altar making for deceased loved ones, visiting and decorating graves. The Chicano/Latino community at Stanford annually commemorates Día de los Muertos with a week of student-run activities that include a celebration of Latino martyrs, tombstone, mask and papel picado making. These activities not only celebrate age-old Día de los Muertos traditions, but also teach the Stanford community about Latino culture. The week-long celebration culminates with a ceremony on Saturday where Los Cojolites, Los Danzantes, Ballet Folklorico and El Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford will perform. All decorations made during the preceding week will be on display and the altar will be available for viewing inside El Centro Chicano, Jaime Miranda Lounge.
