DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:=3Cb=3EThe Central Role of =22Kids of All Ages=22 in the Design=2C Development =26 Growth of Interactive Computing and Digital Media=3C/b=3E=0D=0A=0D=0AFor the past 40+ years=2C kids =28of all ages=29 have played an often unseen=2C but very critical role in the development of multiple generations of of interactive computing and related digital media technologies=2E While interactive education/learning and edutainment have been target applications for young people since the development of the first computer-assisted instruction =28CAI=29 in the 1960=27s=2C this growing target consumer audience has often co-designed and driven the growth of major new computing paradigms and digital media -- from the first personal computer created at Xerox PARC to new programming languages =28for the rest of us=29=2C animation=2C  multiplayer games=2C virtual worlds and social networks=2E=0D=0A=0D=0AThis talk will combine a number of personal stories and examples from the past four decades=2C but will connect this to current work I=27m doing to help catalyze kids co-creating a Virtual Museum of the Future in Second Life=2C co-developing new applications for robotic pet dinosaurs =28Pleo=29=2C and the creation of open source web-based collaboratories as dynamic community knowledge and learning gardens=2E The central theme will tie to the power of social learning in communities of practice=2C as well as re-thinking how the creativity and technology skills of today=27s digital natives can help shape and re-shape the future=2E=0D=0A=3Chr=3E=0D=0A=3Ci=3ETed Kahn is the co-founder=2C President and CEO of DesignWorlds for Learning=2C Inc=2E and Chief Learning Officer/Learning =26 Careers Coach for DesignWorlds for College and Careers=2E Kahn is an award-winning developer of educational multimedia products=2C hypermedia computer-based training systems and user education strategies and support materials for new kinds of tools for lifelong learning and creativity=2E He has been actively involved in the creation=2C development and support of the field of interactive computing and digital media for learning for nearly 40 years=2E Starting with co-founding the Computer Education Project at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley in 1971=2C he did his PhD research with personal computer visionaries and pioneers=2C Alan Kay=2C Adele Goldberg and the Learning Research Group at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center =28PARC=29 in the mid-late 1970=27s=2E He  was then founding Executive Director of the Atari Institute for Educational Action Research =28Atari/Warner Communications=29=2C an executive with Picodyne Corporation and Manager of User Education at  Digital F/X=2C Inc=2E =28which pioneered desktop digital video editing and production systems on the Macintosh in 1989-1991=29=2E His more recent action and learning design research work was at the Institute for Research on Learning =28IRL=29=2C and the Galef Institute=2E His work at DesignWorlds has focused on the design and development of online collaborative learning communities=2C web-based science museum and learning collaboratories=2C and most recently=2C helping guide and coach high school and college students to finding their passions=2C interests and optimal learning/early career paths through college to grad school and beyond=2E In 2003=2C he was named the first lifetime NMC Fellow of the New Media Consortium=2C its highest individual honor=2C for his lifetime of work in developing and using interactive digital technologies and media for learning=2C teaching=2C and creative expression=2E His wife=2C Frona=2C President of DesignWorlds for College=2C was one of the co-founders of The Learning Company in 1981=2C a company which helped launch the educational software industry for personal computers=2E Ted and Frona were both co-founding board members of the Children=27s Discovery Museum of San Jose=2E=0D=0A=0D=0ATed received his B=2EA=2E in computer science =28with distinction=29=2C and his M=2EA and Ph=2ED=2E in psychology=2C all from the University of California=2C Berkeley=2E=3C/i=3E
