Ethics@noon: Sidney Drell, (SLAC) "Ethical Reponsibilities of Scientists"

Basic research in science is an adventure of discovery over uncharted seas toward unknown results as we advance our understanding of nature. But we bear an obligation to assist society, in its political deliberations, to understand the potential benefits and risks and to shape in beneficial ways the applications of scientific progress for which we are responsible. Drell views this as a moral obligation of the community of science as a whole.
