SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Viral Forecasting Seminar=2C by Nathan Wolfe
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Nathan Wolfe=2C UCLA=2C Lorry I=2E Lokey Visiting Professor in Human Biology at Stanford=0D=0A=0D=0AA synopsis of what viral forecasting is=2C from his website=3A=0D=0A=22Current global disease control focuses almost exclusively on responding to epidemics after they have already spread globally=2E Nevertheless=2C dramatic failures in such pandemic control=2E=2E=2E have shown that this wait-and-respond approach is not sufficient=2C and that the development of systems to prevent novel pandemics before they are established should be considered a human health imperative=2E=2E=2E =0D=0A=0D=0AWe have spent the last ten years developing a global system to prevent pandemics=2E We have shown that most major diseases of humanity originated in animals and that exposure to wild and domestic animals leads to continuous spillovers of novel agents into humans=2E Through ongoing monitoring of humans who are highly exposed to animals =28e=2Eg=2E through hunting=2C butchering=2C and other activities=29 we have created a pilot for the first global early warning system to prevent novel pandemics=2E By coupling this innovative surveillance in field sites throughout the world with a consortium of top laboratories we are able to characterize the diversity of viruses and other agents as they move from animals into human populations=2C providing basic insights into how new diseases enter humans and improving our ability to decrease the frequency of such events=2E=22=0D=0A=0D=0A
