Transcendentalism, Abolitionism, and the Civil War

David Reynolds, Distinguished Professor of English and American Studies, CUNY Graduate Center, will talk. He is the author of "Walt Whitman's America: A Cultural Biography" (winner of the Bancroft Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, and selected as an "Outstanding Academic Book of the Year" by Choice). He is also the author of "Beneath the American Renaissance: The Subversive Imagination in the Age of Emerson and Melville. He is editor of "A Historical Guilde to Walt Whitman", and is currently completing "John Brown: A Cultural Biography".
