Bonnie V. Winston Public Safety Team Editor, Norfolk Virginian-Pilot

Winston was born in Richmond, Virginia, and educated at Northwestern University. She began her career in journalism in 1979 as a reporter at The Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch, the first African-American reporter to be hired full time in the paper's history. In 1986, she left for The Boston Globe, where she worked as a statehouse reporter. She returned to Virginia as a political and legislative reporter at The Virginian-Pilot in 1987. She went back to The Times-Dispatch as an editor for five years before moving back to The Pilot, where she has been an editor since 1999. Her news writing has won her awards from the Virginia Press Association and United Press International.
