Black Writers Lecture Series "Are They With Us or Against Us?: The Political Futures of African Americans and Hispanics"

Lynne K. Varner Editorial Writer & Columnist, Seattle Times

Varner was born in Stuggart, Germany, grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland and was educated at the University of Maryland in College Park. She began her journalism career as a reporter at United Press International, before heading to the Washington Post as a suburban reporter. She moved to Seattle in 1992, first as a schools reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and then in 1998 to the Seattle Times, where she is an editorial writer. She has written on issues ranging from public education and politics to race and community. She has been awarded fellowships at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the Casey Journalism Center for Children and Families and the Maynard Institute.
