Fast and extensive developments in natural language technology has been made in the past two decades. In this study we explore the possibilities of applying text analysis and summarization tools to learn from text documents the various discussions surrounding the current economic crisis, to identify opinion clusters, contradictory opinions, to track the market sentiment and the warning signals of economic crisis over time. Included in our analysis are news, selected announcements, reports and publications of government and international organizations, as well as blogs of influential economists.
Dr. Shuhua Liu is an Academy Research Fellow of the Academy of Finland. She is currently a visiting scholar at H-Star, Stanford University. Her research interests include text summarization and information extraction for business intelligence applications and decision support, machine learning methods in information extraction and text understanding, information and business applications of intelligent agents, fuzzy clustering analysis in the empirical study of financial crises, and business environmental scanning and crisis early warning systems.
