HEPL SEMINAR: Andrew Wray: Peer Review and How to Get Published in Physics Journals

Peer review is an integral part of the scientific process and most scientists will review and be reviewed many times in their career. I will give an overview refereeing for research journals, a process that includes selecting referees, setting quality standards and handling adjudications or appeals. The talk will center on Institute of Physics Publishing, a learned society publisher, but we will look at some differences between physics and other disciplines. In the editorial office we work with authors and referees to improve papers and to select the interesting results that advance our knowledge. This process must be (and be seen to be) fast and fair. As all physics researchers are involved in reviewing or being reviewed, there will be time for discussion and questions.

Andrew Wray is Senior Publisher for High Energy Physics at IOP Publishing, the publishing arm of the Institute of Physics learned society in the UK. He is responsible for the content and development of research journals including Classical and Quantum Gravity, J Phys G, JHEP, JCAP and New Journal of Physics. He also works across IOP Publishing on the development of author and referee web pages, design and usage of online journals and electronic archiving. Prior to working in publishing he studied physics and was a research student in the relativity and cosmology group at Newcastle University.
