Donald Kennedy, Ph.D. - Innovation or Research: Navigating the Gray Zone

The Lasker Forum in May of 2003 explored some unmapped terrain between relatively unregulated medical innovation undertaken in the interest of the patient and clinical investigation of new procedures or treatments undertaken under more formal research protocols with regulatory oversight. Dr. Kennedy will report on some cases that were studied at the forum, including modified medical devices, assisted reproductive technology, off-label drug prescribing, and the uses of fMRI as adjuncts to psychotherapy.

Donald Kennedy, Ph.D., former Stanford president and a faculty member since 1960, is the Bing Professor of Environmental Science, emeritus at Stanford's Institute for International Studies. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for Science magazine, the weekly journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is on the board of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
