Leadership in engineering involves an ability to perform different types of roles: 1. leadership as an engineer --for example, an innovative lead engineer in a space project; 2. leadership as a manager of engineers and engineering projects -- for instance the manager of an oil platform's design and construction; 3. leadership in engineering education -- e.g., the leader of a research team in material science; and 4. leadership by engineers in government -- for example, an engineer in the U.S. Congress (of which there are very few). People who perform these roles need to have a vision and an "ear to the ground", but also the ability to balance creativity, productivity and freedom of R&D, with ethics and regulations. Elisabeth will discuss what these four types of leadership entail and the role of women in these positions.
