David Lang Program

Sure to be one of the most talked-about events of the season, Paul Hillier’s acclaimed a cappella Theatre of Voices makes a rare appearance outside Europe, sharing the program with four celebrated and artistically diverse musicians, each equally respected in the worlds of pop and new music: Bryce Dessner of The National, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Nico Muhly, and Owen Pallett. The music is all by David Lang (Stanford ’78), including the bracing, contemplative Little Match Girl Passion (which earned Lang the Pulitzer Prize, and Theatre of Voices a Grammy), and the world premiere of Death Speaks, a Lively Arts–commissioned companion work that the composer imagines full of “post-folk darkness and introspection.”
