New York -based singer/pianist Dena DeRose began her career as a jazz pianist. When two hand surgeries shut down her playing for almost three years, a casual foray into singing uncovered a serious vocal talent. By the time she returned to the piano, her work as a vocalist had transformed her playing. Today she is recognized as both a remarkable pianist and vocalist with an increasingly appreciative audience in the Bay Area following successful stints at the Stanford Jazz Festival, the Plush Room, Yoshi's and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Regarded as "the most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn," (Joel Siegel) DeRose "interprets standards in a deliciously laconic, no-nonsense manner, accompanying herself on the piano with hard swinging grace." (Washington Post). DeRose is accompanied by her long-time collaborator Michael Zisman on bass and dynamic Bay Area percussionist George Marsh.
