State Attorney General Bill Lockyer

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer is the chief law enforcement officer of the state. He is widely considered the front-runner in the 2006 gubernatorial race.

As Attorney General, Lockyer has made extraordinary strides. He established a new office of immigrant assistance and a new civil rights unit, he started an environmental law enforcement division, and he sued the Bush administration over the environmental damange a terrorist attack on nuclear facilities would cause. He attracted fire from both sides for delaying lawsuits over San Francisco's gay marriages, but then filed suits to stop them even though he declared he was personally a supporter of gay marriage. He also has responsibilities vis-a-vis Homeland Security and the Patriot Act.
