Prospects for Peace in Sudan

-- Did You Know? --

Sudan has been in civil war for 40 of the past 50 years since independence.

In the past 20 years, 2 million+ lives were lost in the civil war (~250+ per day).

In the past 20 years, 6 million+ were forced from their homes (~750+ per day).

In the past 6 months, 700,000+ were forced from their homes (~4000+ per day).

What are the causes of this war? What is the impact on Sudan and her 10 neighbours? What are the prospects for peace in Sudan between all factions and all ethnic groups? How does the conflict inform debate on humanitarian intervention?

Prof. Deng will be taking up these issues and will be open for Q&A after his lecture. He will be joining us subsequent to his testimony on the current situation in Sudan at the UN Human Rights Commission.

Prof. Francis Deng, John Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies; Former Foreign Minister of Sudan; Representative of UN Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons; Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution; JSD Yale Law School (in human rights law).
