"West Indian in the West": A Talk by Professor Percy Hintzen

Renowned UC Berkeley Professor Percy C. Hintzen, Ph.D. Comparative Political Sociology, M.Phil. Comparative Sociology, M.A. Sociology and International Urbanization and Public Policy, and author of "West Indian in the West" joins us to discuss West Indian immigration to the United States and the ensuing cultural and social issues that West Indian immigrants must overcome. He will also have copies of his books "West Indian in the West: Self Representations in a Migrant Community " and "Problematizing Blackness: Self-Ethnographies by Black Immigrants to the United States" available for purchase before and after the talk. He is an incredible speaker and is nationally known for his expertise on the Caribbean.

Professor Hintzen is the current Director and Chair of the African and African American Studies department at the University of California at Berkeley. He taught in his native country at the University of Guyana (Lecturer) and at Yale University (Acting Instructor) before coming to the University of California at Berkeley in 1979. Professor Hintzen currently holds the position of external examiner for the University of the West Indies. He teaches courses at UC Berkeley in Political and Economic Development, Caribbean Political Economy, Comparative Race and Ethnic Relations, and Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods.
