Dr. Klaus S. Lackner of Columbia University will discuss the following:
Without major technological change, satisfying the energy needs and desires of ten billion people would lead to environmental disaster. Sound energy strategies cannot ignore the plentiful and cheap fossil fuels used today, but their continued use will require net-zero carbon technologies that likely will include permanent disposal of CO2 in carbonate form, power plants that eliminate all emissions to the air, and the capture of CO2 from air. Air capture could not only control atmospheric CO2 concentration without abandoning existing infrastructure; it eventually could recycle carbon through a renewable energy infrastructure that relies on synthetic carbonaceous fuels rather than hydrogen.
Reception to follow on patio of Mitchell Building.
