"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
—Universal Declaration of Human Rights Adopted by the United Nations in 1948
The Stanford Summer Human Rights Program is an interdisciplinary collaboration that explores emerging issues in human rights through a series of courses, public lectures, and films. The program will focus on international human rights in the 21st century, considering both state and non-state actors in securing rights for all.
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
Camera as Witness—China, Iran, Vietnam, USA—Dialogue Through Culture
Documentary film is an extraordinarily powerful player in the human rights arena. It can bring worldwide attention to abuses in the most remote places, disseminate information, move viewers emotionally, and not infrequently affect political change and mitigation of wrongs. Stanford’s Camera as Witness program will screen three powerful films—one from China, Iran, and Vietnam—demonstrating that the art of film is a powerful diplomatic force in righting wrongs around the world.
