European Roundtable: EU at a Crossroads: Tension Between Expansion & Integration (EVT 72)

Stanford Continuing Studies is pleased to offer a forum for the presentation and discussion of current economic and political developments in Europe. The European Roundtable will begin in the Fall of 2004 and will serve as a regular opportunity for listening to, and discussing with, experts on European affairs from Stanford and beyond.

On May 1, 2004, ten new member states in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe joined the EU in its largest single expansion, bringing the total population of the EU to some 480 million in an area ranging from Ireland to Lithuania and from Sweden to Malta. This expansion opens up both tremendous opportunities for economic advancement and a host of political and structural problems in a highly diverse community of nations, including a major controversy over the EU's future constitutional framework and the further course of European integration.

Hans N. Weiler of Stanford will give an overview lecture and then be joined by three specialists on the European integration process—Christophe Crombez of the University of Leuven and Stanford, Meredith Heiser-Duron of Foothill College and Stanford, and Timothy Josling of Stanford, for a panel discussion on the prospects of European integration and its significance for the relationship between Europe and the US.
