Before George Edward Pickett led his eponymous charge at Gettysburg, he served as a U.S. Army officer in Washington State, where he fathered a child with a Native American woman. This talk by the Stanford political science department's Scott D. Sagan, explores issues of race and gender in the context of the relationships between Army officers and Native American women in the antebellum Pacific Northwest.
