Justice and Health Care: Raising the Wind

Carol Bayley, Ph.D.

Catholic Healthcare West

The current US health care system is a sinking ship--costs are out of control, neither doctors nor patients are satisfied, for-profit hospitals and insurance companies compete with not-for-profits, outcomes are nowhere near commensurate with the money we spend and 44 million people have no insurance. Health care is one social good among many. Any reform of the system will need to consider the nature of deep social change.

Carol Bayley, Ph.D., is the Vice President for Ethics and Justice Education at Catholic Healthcare West, a large multi-hospital health system with services in California, Arizona and Nevada. She is responsible for education in applied ethics for physicians, nurses, residents, staffs and ethics committees, and the integration of ethical concerns into business decisions at all levels of the organization. An adjunct faculty member at the University of San Francisco School of Nursing, Dr. Bayley has published in the areas of alternative medicine, the philosophy of science, pharmacy ethics, genetics and medical error.

The Biomedical Ethics Grand Rounds are presented on the first Tuesday of each month from 8 am — 9 am in the Clark Center Auditorium.
