Ruth Davies' Blues Night with special guest Henry Butler

Inside Jazz: New Orleans Piano — A Tradition of Fun, with Kathleen Lawton (KCSM) - Wednesday, July 24, 6:30 p.m., prior to Ruth Davies’ Blues Night with special guest Henry Butler

This year’s Blues Night features special guest Henry Butler, a two-fisted, New Orleans blues piano colossus with gargantuan technique and immense physical power. Blind from birth, the “pride of New Orleans” —as he’s called by Dr. John—will channel Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Allen Toussaint, will show you things you never thought possible on the piano. A longtime SJW faculty member, bassist Ruth Davies has serious credentials in blues and jazz. A short list of the artists she’s toured or recorded with includes John Lee Hooker, Charles Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, Jimmy Witherspoon, Clark Terry, and Elvin Bishop. Ruth’s Blues Night at the Stanford Jazz Festival has sold out nearly every year, thanks to her uncanny ability to put together backing bands that would be headliners in most situations.
