While a number of Christian denominations and communities have become more welcoming of LGBTQ persons, ministers and marriage equality, many believers oppose such acceptance and understand it as contrary to the Bible and Christian doctrine. Join Bishop Robinson and Gabe Lyons for an engaging conversation about the state of family values and marriage equality in the Christian church today. A book signing will be held in the Round Room after the event.
Bishop Gene Robinson is a retired Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire and is the first openly gay bishop consecrated in the Episcopal Church. He is the author of God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage. The film, Love Free or Die, a Sundance Film Festival 2012 award winner, tells his compelling story and parallels the conversation underway in many American churches about whether gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are equal to heterosexuals in the eyes of God and equal under the law. Bishop Robinson is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC.
Gabe Lyons is the author of The Next Christians: The Good News About the End of Christian America and the founder of Q — a learning community that mobilizes Christians to advance the common good in society. Additionally, he is the co-author of UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity and Why It Matters.
