She began piano at age 4. Her first jazz experience was hearing Dave Brubeck's "Take Five". At 17 she moved to Philadelphia and began "gigging." By 28 she was a member of the Philly Joe Jones Quintet.
Today, Brubeck is among her fans, calling her "one of the greatest pianists I've ever heard." ALL MUSIC GUIDE describes her as a "a powerful virtuoso whose complete control of the keyboard, wit, and solid sense of swing have combined to make her a particularly notable player."
She has played with Philly Joe Jones, Tony Williams, Eddie Harris, Stan Getz, Leroy Vinnegar, Big Nick Nicholaus, Airto and Flora, Charlie Rouse, Dexter Gordon, John Abercrombie, Victor Lewis, Ray Drummond, Mel Brown, Dave Captein, Jeff Johnson, Dick Berk. Recent honors and awards include a 2004 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
