Schubertiade 2005: A Tribute to Franz Schubert

A Tribute to Franz Schubert With Benjamin Simon and Members of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra

During Schubert's lifetime, gatherings of his friends and colleagues for conversation and music-making were known as Schubertiades.

Stanford will host its own Schubertiade on Saturday, February 12, 2005 featuring violist and conductor Benjamin Simon and members of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. The featured soloist will be internationally-renowned soprano Zheng Cao, who has performed on numerous occasions with the San Francisco Opera, and with opera companies around the world. Zheng Cao will sing a selection of Schubert songs, accompanied by piano virtuoso Mack McCray, professor of piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Other works on the program include Schubert's marvelous Octet for winds and strings, and his ever-popular "Trout" Quintet for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

Just twelve days after Schubert's 208th birthday, our Schubertiade will feature a special rendition of "Happy Birthday," a large birthday cake, and door prizes for audience members who show up in period costumes. A delightful evening of chamber music and high spirits in the best Schubertiade tradition.
