"Water Management in Unconventional Hydrocarbon Development: Opportunities and Tradeoffs"
Unconventional oil and gas development, made possible through innovations in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, has grown enormously in North America in the past decade and is likely to expand worldwide. The magnitude of water required of operations, water contamination risks, and the treatment and disposal of wastewaters from unconventional hydrocarbon development have generated considerable public concern. This seminar will address multiple opportunities to minimize water use and protect water resources along with the inherent tradeoffs and barriers associated with adopting these best practices. International perspectives on policies, regulations, data gaps, and risk management will also be discussed.
