Kinuyo Tanaka Film Series

Kinuyo Tanaka Film Series. We will be screening 8 films starring Japanese film legend, Kinuyo Tanaka. The screenings will be Wednesday evenings, 7:30 PM. All films are 35mm prints with English subtitles. We will be showing famous masterpieces as well as rarely screened treasures. A wonderful opportunity to learn about Japanese film.

The first film in the series:

Dragnet Girl (1933): Yasujiro Ozu. A silent film. A surprising film for those only familiar with Ozu's postwar "family dramas," but actually a representative work from the early years of his career, when he was known as one of the most innovative and creative directors in Japan. His idiosyncratic, and somewhat comical, take on the American gangster film, with Tanaka playing a reformed gang moll.

Live musical accompaniment by David Olachea.
