Seventh film in Kinuyo Tanaka Film Series:
Red Beard (1965): Akira Kurosawa. A historical drama directed by America's favorite Japanese director (and my attempt to respond to numerous requests from last year that the next film series include at least one Kurosawa film). Probably Kurosawa's finest film from the '60s, Akahige recounts the career of an Edo period physician. A classic Kurosawa epic, with big production values, innovative editing, and sweeping cinematography. Tanaka, in her only film with the director, is featured in the role of an ambitious mother.
