Abstract
By the end of 2003, the total number of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) users around the world reached 64 million. Regionally, Asia-Pacific remains the largest region in the world with over 20 million subscribers, representing the market share of over 31%. In Japan, the number of DSL subscribers was only sixteen thousand as of January 2001; it has increased to over 12 million by June 2004. The access services using CATV and FTTH (Fiber To The Home) have 2.7 and 1.4 million subscribers, respectively, as of the end of June 2004. Therefore 16 million Japanese households are enjoying broadband access to the Internet, while its population is 120 million. The mobile phone internet users are 71 million. Broadband services, technologies and its market trend in Japan will be updated in this talk. JGN2 (Japan Gigabit Network 2) is implemented in April 2004 for R&D purposes connecting major Japanese cities which is funded by governmental research centre NICT (National Institute of Information and Communications Technology). Recently an international 10Gbps link is extended for the US. Its configuration will be presented.
