ENCOUNTER:MERCE Black Mountain College: An Experiment in Art

Spurring a revolutionary movement in art and education, Black Mountain College was a place for experimentation and creation as well as the birthplace of Cunningham's groundbreaking dance company. Join Cunningham and friends in a panel discussion about the innovative teaching ideology of the school and its legendary faculty, including Buckminster Fuller, eminent scientist and philosopher.

Included on the panel are Carolyn Brown and Remy Charlip, founding members and former dancers with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, who were both at Black Mountain College with Cunningham; esteemed literature critic and Stanford Professor Emerita Marjorie Perloff; and Laura Kuhn, director of the John Cage Trust, as moderator.

The discussion will be followed by Musicollage: A Happening by CCRMA and Friends.

This is event is part of Encounter:Merce, Stanford's campus-wide interdisciplinary exploration through the arts, focusing on the life and art of Merce Cunningham, legendary choreographer, dance innovator, and artistic thinker.
