A small community in the Kashmir Valley becomes known as the “Rape Village” after the events of Feb 23rd, 1991. The 36 women who were mass raped that night, allegedly by Indian security forces, still can't remember what exactly happened to them. Indian government inquiries refuse to confirm the women's testimony of events, even as the women suffer the intense stigma of being rape victims. Exactly 14 years since their traumatic experience, MSAN will be screening “When the Storm Came,” an award winning 24 minute documentary that recreates the harrowing story of these women through a series of evocative interviews. The film's director, Shilpi Gupta, will also give a presentation on martial rape and her experiences within Kashmir.
This film is Winner of the student Oscar and Student Emmy and Recipient of the Sundance Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking
