The Roosevelt Institution Luncheon Series—Jenny Tolan

Roosevelt Fellow Jenny Tolan, of the Center on International Development, Democracy and Health, will present her paper exploring the prevalence of AIDS in married African women and recommending policy to curb infection.

Last summer, Tolan spent eight weeks at a Home-Based Care Project for AIDS patients and orphans in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa. While in Mpumalanga, Tolan interviewed many women who worked for the program, and upon returning to Stanford, compared her interviews with outside research to investigate AIDS vulnerability among African women.

Tolan made a shocking discovery—married African women are actually more at risk for HIV/AIDS than single women. Tolan will explore the many reasons for this disparity, discuss how AIDS policy is overlooking married women, and suggest a policy of "Female-Controlled Prevention,” which might better reach married women—the world's most at-risk group.

All community members are encouraged to attend. Cheesecake Factory cheesecake and refreshments will be served.
