"Cognitive Neuroscience of Mental Arithmetic"

ABSTRACT:

Arithmetic reasoning is arguably one of the most important cognitive skills

a child must master. In this talk, I will summarize our current

understanding of the cognitive and neural bases of mental arithmetic. I

will describe findings from our recent brain imaging studies of both

typical and atypical mental arithmetic skill development. Finally, I will

describe how our studies provide new insights into long-term memory

consolidation, and how this consolidation impacts the development of

arithmetic skills and knowledge.
