Pimps, Wimps, Whores, and Bores

Relying on the expertise found in the experiences of the audience, this workshop utilizes interactive discussion to explore the effects of gender ideologies on sexual/relationship behavior. Using language as a “window” into sexual culture, we will uncover the level to which the audience has internalized gender roles and ideologies. We will discuss how we "buy-in" to the gender system and we, in turn, perpetuate the rules of this system to others. Next, we will show how gender ideologies tend to inhibit health seeking behavior/promote risky behaviors. Time permitting, we will draw links between this powerful and pervasive system and health issues including: HIV and other STDs, unwanted pregnancy, relationship violence, body image and eating disorders, alcohol and other drug use, sexual assault, initiation and hazing. This workshop is crucial for those planning and implementing sexual health programs.
