Professor Lee is the leading senior scholar in the field of twentieth-century Chinese literature. He is the author of The Romantic Generation of Modern Chinese Writers (1973), Voices from the Iron House: A Study of Lu Hsun (1987), and Shanghai Modern: The Flowering of a New Urban Culture in China: 1930 - 1945 (1999), as well as several books in Chinese. He is also the editor of Lu Xun and His Legacy (1985) and the co-editor of An Intellectual History of Modern China (2002).
