Personal, Humanitarian, Political and Legal Perspectives--11 Years After Genocide: Rwanda Past, Present and Future

Join us for a day exploring the personal, humanitarian, political, and legal aspects of the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath. The day will begin with registration, at 9:30 a.m., and conclude with a Rwandan musical and dance performance, at 5:00 p.m. Breakfast, and a lunch catered by Paxti's Pizza, Chevys and the Cheesecake Factory, will be served. The day's events and guests are detailed below.

9:30am — 10:00am—Registration and Continental breakfast

10:00am — 10:10am—Introduction/Welcome

10:10am — 11:30am—Personal stories of Rwandan genocide survivors Yves Ngabonziza, Martin Musabyimana, Bosco Mugiraneza, Georges Ndabashimiye, Nicole Mutesi and Roger Remera.

11:45am — 1:00pm—Humanitarian perspectives from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director of CARE International, Rwanda; Maudi Mukenge, Program Officer for Africa, Global Fund for Women; Theoneste Rutagengwa, Rwandese Human Rights activist; and Marcel Twizeyemungu, Teen Librarian, San Francisco Library, Bayview Branch

1:00pm — 2:00pm—Lunch provided by Paxti's Pizza, the Cheesecake Factory and Chevys.

2:00pm — 3:00pm—Political perspectives—Mr. Telesphore Kagaba, Political Assistant, U.S. Embassy in Rwanda

3:15pm — 4:45pm—Justice and Reconciliation issues panel including Terry Karl, Professor, Political Science Department, Stanford University; Geraldine Umugwaneza, Coordinator of the Gacaca courts in Rwanda; Helen Stacy, Lecturer, Stanford School of Law; and Jean-Pierre Sadi Karegeye of the Interdisciplinary Genocide Working group at UC-Berkeley

4:45pm — 4:55pm—Closing remarks

4:55pm — 5:00pm—Cultural performance by Rwandan music and dance group

There will be a reception to follow for all speakers and invited guests.
