The evolving nature of domestic politics in China, and the potential for democratization, will have a major impact on the development of U.S.-China relations. With a White House that has made democratization and supporting democratic regimes a cornerstone of its foreign policy, China's one-party system, and lack of national elections, may increasingly become a problem in the bilateral relationship. In this seminar, Professor Diamond, a noted expert on democratization who has a particular interest in China, will look at the role elections and an expanding civil society currently play in China, as well as the importance of continued economic development and its relation to political change.
