Exchanges in Media: New Openings and New Barriers

This seminar will focus on the complex dynamic between American and Chinese media. In the 21st century, media portrayals of the U.S. and China not only influence the development of official U.S./China relations, but also permeate and complicate our understandings and perceptions of each other. The future of these exchanges — the opportunities and obstacles that they are creating between the two nations — will be explored. How does the ongoing liberalization of the Chinese media change the ways in which information is disseminated, and how do these trends influence bilateral relations? How do new mediums of communication, such as the widespread use of the Internet, change the ways that U.S. and China perceive each other?
