Keynote Address: Envisioning Our Trans-Pacific Future: U.S./China Relations into the 21st Century

James R. Lilley, Former U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China

Moderator: Jean Oi, Director, Center for East Asian Studies, William Haas Professor in Chinese Politics, Stanford University

Ambassador Lilley will address the present and future state of bilateral relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China, both discussing major current trends and possible scenarios for the near future. Drawing on over a half-century of public service in the CIA, White House, State Department, and Defense Department, as well as a lifetime engaged with China, Ambassador Lilley will draw on his own experiences, especially as Ambassador to China from 1989 to 1991, to address possible areas of cooperation and areas of conflict in a bilateral relationship that is as complex and multifaceted as it is crucial for the peace and security of the world. A question and answer session, moderated by Professor Oi, will follow the speech.
