Tyler Stovall is professor of French history at the University of California at Berkeley and Director of the France-Berkeley Fund. He received his BA from Harvard University and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Stovall's area of expertise is 20th-century France. He is the author of The Rise of the Paris Red Belt (1990), Paris Noir: African Americans in the City of Light (1996) and co-editor of both The Color of Liberty: Histories of Race in France (Durham: Duke University Press, 2003 and French Civilization and Its Discontents: Nationalism, Colonialism, Race. (After the Empire: The Francophone World and Postcolonial France.) Lanham, Md.: Lexington Books. 2003.
