Daniel Pearl Music Day Concert

The second annual Daniel Pearl Music Day Concert will take place on October 9 at 8 p.m. in Stanford University's Memorial Church. It is free and open to all. It is sponsored by Stanford's Office for Religious Life and the Dept. of Music's Chamber Music LIVE! series.

The program will include: "Terzetto" composed by Antonin Dvorak and performed by Geoff Nuttall, violin; Livia Sohn, viola; and Barry Shiffman, viola. "Sink or Swim" composed by Jonathan Berger, Associate Professor in the Music Dept. and performed by Livia Sohn, violin. "Zwei Gesange" composed by Joannes Brahms and performed by Jennifer Lane, mezzo-soprano and accompanied by Barry Shiffman, viola; and George Barth, Associate Professor in the Music Dept., piano. A piano solo, "Elegy," composed and performed by Mark Applebaum, Assistant Professor in the Music Dept. Shiffman and Nuttall are members of St. Lawrence String Quartet, University Ensemble-in-Residence.

Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who lost his life to terrorists in Pakistan, was not only a journalist but also an avid musician who carried his mission of dialogue through words and music in all his travels. In every city he lived, he joined a band, orchestra or chamber group and made new friends through his passion for music, friendship and humanity.

Daniel Pearl graduated from Stanford in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in communication. At a memorial at Stanford, Danny's classmates remembered him as a magnificent violinist, whose music and writing both reflected, "precision, intensity, soulfulness, gentleness, compassion from within."

Danny's death has inspired a tremendous outpouring of goodness and fellowship among people of all cultures, regardless of geography. To sustain and channel this inspiration, the Daniel Pearl Foundation, www.danielpearl.org, has decided to celebrate Danny's birthday as a day of music-making worldwide.
