RELIGIOUS PLURALISM? Religion, Ethnicity, and National Identity in CHinese Buddhism"

Stephen F. Teiser, D.T. Suzuki Professor in Buddhist Studies, Princeton University surveys how the problem of ethnic difference was construed in different genres of Buddhist historiography. Teiser argues that some Buddhist authors were concerned with the difference, not between Buddhism and other religious traditions, but between Chinese and non-Chinese. In short, what mattered most was ethnic difference, not religious difference.
