Measles still kills--but we can beat it. Last year, Stanford raised enough money to vaccinate 2,000 children in Africa through the One Child, One Dollar campaign on campus. Between 2000 and 2005, the Measles Initiative, sponsered by the American Red Cross, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and UNICEF have helped vaccinate 150 million children against measles. And it's paying off: over that 5-year period, measles related deaths have decreased by nearly half. This year, the American Red Cross student club and the Student Campaign for Child Survival hope to continue with this effort to eradicate measles from Africa by 2009.
