Hamlet: at the Cantor Arts Center

The Stanford Shakespeare Society, a nationally recognized student-run repertory theater troupe presents Hamlet at the Cantor Arts Center. In this production, Shakespeare's brilliant black comedy thriller of bloodlust, betrayal and obsession undergoes a provocative intercultural reinvention. The tainting of the line of Elsinore by fratricide and incestuous coupling incites a conflict of violent sensuality in this East meets West adaptation, pitting a traditional feudal Asian kingdom against its enlightened, philosophical Prince. .” Thai sword-fighting, original Japanese-inflected costume design and an original Balinese Gamelan score in the stunning setting of Stanford's Cantor Arts Center celebrate the universality of this 400-year old text and the great wit and clown that is its ponymous hero.
