There are hundreds of graduate women studying science and engineering at Stanford. We are all working to succeed in fields that have typically been male dominated, and we face similar challenges day to day and over the years.
Many groups have emerged to support the students in specific departments or schools, providing a large variety of excellent resources to the Stanford community. Awareness of specific events and services has often been solely local, though, leading to low attendance, occasional event conflicts, and duplication of efforts across groups. We want to change that.
We invite you to join us in forming SEGWA, the Science and Engineering Graduate Women's Association, pronounced "segue". We want to promote interdisciplinary communication and collaboration between women and women's organizations in science and engineering, hoping to increase the efficiency and impact of related organizational efforts on the Stanford campus.
Our first event is a dinner, held this Tuesday, July 19, from 6:00 to 7:30pm in the Nairobi Room at the Graduate Community Center. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend. We hope that representatives from every existing women's organizations will be able to participate.
During this dinner, we will share our initial plans with the group, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions. We want SEGWA to be a useful addition to the lives of all graduate women in science and engineering, supporting and strengthening the excellent groups and resources that already exist.
Please feel free to share this invitation with other women you know, especially if you will not be able to attend the event yourself. If you will be joining us, please RSVP to tjterry@stanford.edu so that we can be sure to provide enough food. We look forward to meeting with everyone on Tuesday!
