Music that Dances: featuring performances by members of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra
Music that Dances: Transcultural Gestures in the Stanford Symphony Orchestra 2017 Tour to Cuba and Mexico explores what Enlightenment-era symphonic form, Russian exoticism, African time lines, and contemporary Latin American music have in common. Across centuries and cultures, disparate musical expressions have found their origins in dance. As the Stanford Symphony Orchestra prepares its concert tour of Cuba and Mexico this summer, we aim to be conduits for cultural exchange by presenting a diverse repertoire of music that brings people together. Our theme, Music that Dances, connects music from different times and traditions through the lens of dance in aesthetic and social contexts. Join Anna Wittstruck, Acting Assistant Professor in Music and Interim Director of Orchestral Studies, for the final installment of our Music and Context Series: an interdisciplinary discussion about music, dance, culture, and the making of an international concert tour.
