"The Scholar-Baller Lifestyle in 21st Century Athletics and Higher Education:

A Cornel West (Education), Mark West (Sport) and Kanye West (Entertainment) Game Plan"
C. Keith Harrison, Div of Ed Leadership and Policy Studies,
Arizona State University

Keith Harrison's research focuses on perceptions and images of athletes in the media, occupational identities of student-athletes in revenue sports (such as football and basketball), and leadership and diversity in sport. He holds a B.S. and M.A. in physical education, and an Ed.D. in higher and postsecondary education. After two years on the faculty at Washington State University in the College of Education (1995-1997), Dr. Harrison developed and came up with the term "scholar-baller" in his quest to free himself and others from the tension of academic, musical, and athletic priorities. This term is truly the embodiment and synergy of education, hip-hop, and sport. Scholar-baller pays respect to Paul Robeson, whom Dr. Harrison officially named his research lab after in 1998 as a first year faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Currently as the Founder and Director of the Paul Robeson Research Center for Academic and Athletic Prowess, Dr. Harrison engages in research that examines how popular culture and hip-hop impact the educational aspirations and perceptions of youth in society.
