"Gurus, Hired Guns and Warm Bodies," with Stanford Professor Steve Barley

Stephen R. Barley is the Charles M. Pigott Professor of Management Science and Engineering and the co-director of the Center for Work, Technology and Organization at Stanford's School of Engineering. His talk will focus on his book about the trend, especially in high-tech areas, to replace permanent employees with temporary workers and independent contractors to cut labor costs and enhance flexibility. Attendees will learn about the opportunities and challenges of making a career as an independent contractor and about how the market for contractors really operates.
